The horse has been part of Icelandic life from the earliest times. Ever since the settlement of Iceland in the 9th century, and well into the 20th century, the horse was so vital to the Icelanders in their daily work, travel and transport that it would have been all but impossible to live in Iceland without the horse. The horse now has a new role to play, as an indispensable companion. For thousands of Icelanders, equestrianism is not only a leisure pursuit, but a lifestyle.
In this book, the Icelandic horse is followed around the country. The relationship of horse and man is explored: the autumn sheep-round-up, and horseback treks. We learn about the freedom of the horse herds in the upland wilderness, and see unique images of a mare as she foals surrounded by green nature, cleans up and suckles her foal, and helps it take its first unsteady steps.
The author of the book, Anna Fjóla Gísladóttir, has enjoyed the company of horses since childhood, and is well known for her fine photographs of this remarkable creature. The photographs in this book are the fruit of decades of work on this demanding yet captivating theme.
